Yes, we can learn leadership lessons from our dads! Actually, I believe we can all live better when we organize for results. As a mom of two busy kids and the founder of a growing business, I’ve learned that staying organized isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making life smoother, one simple step at a time. And that includes having real conversations with my husband. He too is juggling a corporate position along with fatherhood.
Let me tell you how I do it—and how you can, too. Yep, that includes listening to what he has to say as well.
Start with a Simple Plan
The New Year feels like a fresh page, doesn’t it? I like to sit down with a warm cup of tea and my favorite planner. Then, I ask myself: What do I want my year to feel like?
Instead of long to-do lists, I focus on three things:
Family
My business
Me
I write down one small goal in each area. That’s my base plan. I add a few steps from there to move me closer to those goals. One key step is to check in with my other half. I like to hear if he has any suggestions or recommendations. It’s not about relinquishing control; it’s about collaboration and ensuring support where I want my business to go and grow.
Keep It Visible
If you want to stay on track, you’ve got to see your plan. I use sticky notes, a calendar, and a whiteboard. It’s not fancy—but it works.
Each Sunday night, I spend 10 minutes reviewing the week. What worked? What didn’t? And what can I fix or change?
This keeps me from getting lost in the mess of daily life. When I organize for results, I get more done and feel better doing it. Ironically, this is a tool I used while in corporate, and a tip I learned from my husband while working on a $2.5 million automotive development project.
Time Blocks Help Me Breathe
Time blocking is my secret weapon. It means giving each task a little home in your day.
For example, I block off 9–11 AM for focused work time. I don’t check email, absolutely no scrolling, and I just work.
From 3–4 PM, I’m with my kids—whether it’s homework, soccer, or dance class. That’s their time.
This way, my brain doesn’t feel like a spinning wheel. I know where I need to be and when.
Simplify Your Space
An organized life needs an organized space. But don’t stress—it doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect.
Each week, I tidy just one thing. Maybe it’s the kitchen drawer, maybe it’s my desktop. The point is progress, not perfection. This is one where I get the family involved. We get more done; they feel part of the ‘team’.
When my space is clear, my mind is clear. And when my mind is clear, I feel calm, which carries into my business and relationships.
Make Room for Joy
Remember: your life is more than tasks. I plan time for things I love—reading with my daughter, watching movies with my son, and walking with my husband.
When I plan joy on purpose, I feel better all week. That feeling spreads into my work. Clients notice. My team notices. I notice.
That’s why I say, again and again, organize for results. Results don’t just mean money; they mean peace, joy, and time well spent.
Let’s Do It Together
Most of these tips were ingrained in me as a child, working alongside my dad. Leadership lessons are all around us, and yes, we can learn these from our dads. I know because I did.
These lessons or tips are about leaning into your leadership, leading your business, and your life. You don’t have to do this alone. I’m walking this journey, too. If you have questions or need support with business planning, please schedule a complimentary clarity session with me.
