How to balance work and family is one of my biggest challenges as a business owner and mother. Finding the perfect balance between running a business and being present for my kids’ activities isn’t easy, but it’s possible. Over the years, I’ve learned that balancing work and family is not about perfection—it’s about making choices that align with our values, setting boundaries, and being kind to ourselves.
If you’re a woman building a business while raising a family, I see you. I know the long nights, the early mornings, and the constant feeling of being pulled in different directions. That’s why I want to share the strategies that help me manage my time, grow my business, and still be there for the moments that matter.
1. Set Realistic Expectations
I used to think balance meant giving 100% to everything at once, but that only led to burnout. Instead, I set clear expectations for myself, my clients, and my family. I remind myself that some days my business will need more attention, and other days, my kids will. That’s okay.
One thing that helps is having open conversations. I let my kids know when I have an important meeting, and I tell my clients upfront about my working hours. Clear expectations create smoother days and reduce stress.
2. Use a Simple Schedule That Works
My calendar is full of kids’ school events, hockey and drama practices, and business meetings. I used to feel overwhelmed until I started using time blocking. I set dedicated hours for work, family, and personal time each day.
Here’s what my daily schedule looks like:
- Mornings: Family breakfast, school drop-off, personal time
- Mid-morning to early afternoon: Focused work time (client calls, content creation, emails)
- Afternoon: Break for family (homework help, activities)
- Evenings: Family dinner, wind down, light work if needed
Time blocking ensures that my business and family get my full attention at the right times.
3. Learn to Say No
At first, this was hard for me, but I realized saying “yes” to everything meant saying “no” to my priorities. Now, I ask myself: Does this serve my business goals? Does this bring joy to my family? If the answer is no, I kindly decline.
I also apply this to clients. I choose projects that align with my values and allow me the flexibility I need as a mother. Quality over quantity is key.
4. Make Family Time Sacred
Running a business is important, but my kids’ childhood is fleeting. I protect our family time just as I would an important business meeting. That means no checking emails during family dinners or answering work calls during bedtime stories.
I also create traditions that make family time special. Whether it’s a weekly movie night, baking cookies together, or going on walks, these moments matter. They remind me why I started my business in the first place—to create a life I love with the people I love.
5. Give Yourself Grace
Some days, the balance tips more toward business. On other days, family comes first. And that’s okay. I’ve learned to let go of guilt and celebrate the small wins. Maybe I didn’t finish my to-do list, but I landed a new client. Maybe I had to reschedule a meeting, but I got to see my child perform in a school play.
Balance isn’t about doing it all—it’s about doing what matters most in the moment.
