Out of the Office: Balance Vacations and Work

Summer is my favorite season for practicing vacation work balance. As a mom of two and a business owner, I know how easy it is to feel torn between work and family time. There’s that little voice that whispers, “You should be working,” even when you’re sitting on the beach watching your kids build sandcastles. But here’s the truth—I’ve learned that finding vacation work balance isn’t about doing it all. It’s about planning with intention and giving yourself permission to fully enjoy both parts of your life.

When my kids were younger, I used to take my laptop everywhere. I’d sit by the pool answering emails while pretending to relax. But instead of feeling productive, I felt exhausted. I wasn’t really working or relaxing. That’s when I realized balance comes from creating clear boundaries—and honoring them.

Now, before any vacation, I start by planning. I look at my business schedule and ask: What can I automate? What can I delegate? What can wait? This helps me step away without guilt. For example, I use scheduling tools for social media posts, set up automatic email replies, and let clients know when I’ll be offline. That small act of communication creates trust. People understand that even though I’m out of the office, my business continues to run smoothly.

Best Lessons

One of the best lessons I’ve learned is that balance doesn’t mean splitting your time evenly—it means giving your full attention to the moment you’re in. When I’m with my kids, I put my phone away. When I’m working, I focus on the task at hand. I find that when I show up fully, I get better results in less time.

Another tip for creating vacation work balance is to set realistic expectations. You don’t need to do it all. Maybe you check your messages once in the morning and once in the evening. Perhaps you take one full day off for family adventures and one quiet afternoon to catch up on emails if needed. The key is to choose what works best for you, not what social media says “successful” looks like.

As my kids have grown, I’ve noticed how much they watch me—not just in what I say, but in how I live. When they see me resting, laughing, and enjoying life, they learn that success includes joy. And when they see me focused and passionate about my work, they know the value of commitment. That balance is the best lesson I can teach them.

24/7 Is Not Necessary

Here’s something else I’ve learned: your business doesn’t need you 24/7 to thrive. With the right systems in place, your business can continue to grow while you rest. Utilize tools that help you stay organized, such as project boards or shared calendars, to keep track of your tasks. If you have a team, provide them with clear directions before you leave. If you’re a solo entrepreneur, create checklists to help you pick up right where you left off when you return.

I also like to bring a small notebook on trips. Not for work tasks—but for inspiration. Stepping away often sparks my best ideas. Maybe it’s while walking along the beach, hiking with my family, or sitting at a café with my morning coffee. Inspiration comes when we create space for it. So I write those thoughts down, not as to-dos, but as gentle nudges for when I get back.

If you’re worried that stepping away means losing momentum, remember this: rest is part of progress. Your creativity, focus, and motivation all need space to breathe. A rested you is a better leader, a better mom, and a better CEO.

So, before your next vacation, take a few moments to plan your time with love and intention. Set your priorities, create your boundaries, and trust that your business can thrive even while you rest. Because when you honor your need for both work and joy, you’re not just creating balance—you’re building a life that feels good.

Guilt-Free ~ Yes Please!

I want you to enjoy your time off without guilt. You’ve worked hard for it. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a beach trip, or simply a few quiet days at home, let yourself relax. Remember, vacation work balance isn’t just about managing your time—it’s about protecting your peace.

As women entrepreneurs, we wear so many hats. We lead, nurture, and build. But we also need to refill our own cups. So, this summer, give yourself the gift of balance. Step away. Laugh. Play. Rest. Your business—and your heart—will thank you for it.
