Engagement is at the heart of every successful business. Whether you’re just starting or looking to grow your business, connecting with your audience is the key to building relationships that last. As a mother of two, balancing business with family has taught me that engagement isn’t just about showing up—it’s about showing up with purpose.
Today, I’ll share how you can bring intention and authenticity into your marketing to engage and truly shine.
My Story: Finding Purpose in Engagement
When I restarted my business after moving to the Midwest, I was overwhelmed. Between school pickups, hockey games, and bedtime stories, finding time to connect with my audience felt impossible. Yet, I realized that many of the skills I used to engage with my children—like listening, being present, and genuinely caring—were the same skills that would help my business thrive.
So, I started small. I chose platforms that felt natural to me and where my customers were active. Facebook became my go-to for sharing behind-the-scenes moments, while email newsletters allowed me to connect more personally. With each post, comment, and reply, I found purpose in my engagement.
What Is Engagement Marketing?
Engagement marketing focuses on creating genuine, two-way interactions with your audience. Unlike traditional advertising that pushes messages out, engagement marketing invites your audience to join the conversation. It’s about forming a connection, not just a transaction.
For example, instead of simply posting a sale announcement, you could ask your followers how they plan to use your product and share their answers. This not only boosts engagement but also makes your audience feel seen and valued.
The Four Pillars of Purposeful Engagement
1. Show Up Authentically
People connect with people, not brands. Share your story—the highs, the lows, and the lessons in between. Whether it’s the moment you landed your first sale or the challenges of juggling work and family, authenticity creates trust.
For instance, when I shared how I was inspired to start my business while supporting my dog, Tito through his cancer treatments. I received heartfelt messages from other dog moms who could relate. Those conversations reminded me why I started in the first place.
2. Know Your Audience
Understanding your audience’s needs and interests is crucial. Think about the questions they often ask, the challenges they face, and the things that excite them.
I find it helpful to engage directly—like hosting a Q&A on social media or sending out a quick survey. The more you understand your audience, the easier it is to create content and products that resonate.
3. Be Consistent
Engagement thrives on consistency. Show up regularly, whether it’s through weekly blog posts, daily social media updates, or monthly newsletters. Consistency not only keeps your audience engaged but also positions you as reliable and committed.
A helpful tip: plan your content ahead. I use a simple calendar to jot down what I’ll post and when. It saves time and ensures I never miss an opportunity to connect.
4. Create Value
Every interaction should leave your audience feeling inspired, informed, or entertained. Share tips, answer questions, or offer encouragement. For instance, I once wrote a post about time-saving hacks for busy moms running businesses. It struck a chord with my audience and sparked meaningful conversations.
Remember, value doesn’t always mean offering discounts. Sometimes, it’s as simple as a heartfelt message or a practical tip your audience can use right away.
How to Shine Through Your Engagement
Engagement is more than a strategy—it’s an opportunity to make an impact. Here’s how to take it to the next level:
Respond Thoughtfully: Whether it’s a comment on your post or a reply to your email, take the time to respond with care.
Celebrate Your Audience: Highlight their stories, showcase their testimonials, or simply thank them for their support.
Stay Curious: Pay attention to what resonates most with your audience. Don’t be afraid to try new formats or platforms to keep the connection fresh.
Finding Balance
It’s easy to feel stretched thin, especially when you’re managing a business and a family. But remember, engagement isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. Even small, consistent efforts can lead to meaningful results.
By showing up authentically, understanding your audience, and creating value, you’re not just marketing—you’re building a community. And when you do that with purpose, you’re not just growing your business—you’re making a difference.
