The most expensive businesses Karen Kleinwort works with are not the struggling ones — they're the ones that look fine. In this piece, she names the business cost that never appears on a P&L: the decisions not being made, the clients kept past their time, and the nightly pull toward something the business hasn't become yet. She draws the line between a business that's fine and one that's genuinely right, and names three specific diagnostic signs that the hidden cost is running high. If your business looks good on paper and something still doesn't, this is the article that names what that something probably is.

That's what makes it so hard to name.

She described her business as doing well. And then she paused in a way I've come to recognize — not the pause of someone considering whether to add something, but the pause of someone deciding whether to say the thing they actually came here to say.

The business was doing well. She had the revenue. The clients were good, or good enough. The calendar was full. And she was quietly exhausted in a way that didn't match any of those metrics.

That pause is the thing I work from. Because what it almost always signals is this: the business is fine. The person running it is not. And the business cost — the actual price of keeping it running at this level — isn't appearing anywhere in any report she's running.

For most of the business owners I sit with, the most significant cost is invisible to every tool they're using to measure the business.

It shows up as decisions not made. Clients kept past the point where it makes sense. Offers that should have been retired months ago and are still on the website because removing them feels like admitting something. Energy spent maintaining the current shape of the business rather than building what the business actually wants to become.

None of that appears on the spreadsheet. However, all of it is being paid — by the person keeping the business running.

The business can look fine for years while this cost runs. In fact, the looking-fine is part of what keeps the cost invisible. If the business were obviously struggling, the owner would have to address it. But fine is sustainable enough to continue and quietly expensive enough to exhaust — and that combination is almost always the most costly one.

Right means the business actually belongs to you — that it runs at your pricing, reflects your actual expertise, serves the clients you do your best work with, and doesn't require you to be smaller than you are to keep it running.

Most of the businesses I work with are fine. Fewer of them are right. And the gap between fine and right is almost always where the real business cost is living.

Here is how to tell the difference. After a full day of client work, do you feel depleted or restored? Looking at your client roster, are there names you feel relieved to see alongside names that register as something else? When you describe your business to someone, do you describe what it is — or what you hope it will eventually become?

Those aren't therapy questions. It shows up in recognizable places.

The decisions you're not making.

Every business has decisions that are waiting — a price that needs to move, a client relationship that needs to end, an offer that needs to be retired. The longer those decisions wait, the more the business costs to run. Not because the decisions are hard. Because carrying the undecided thing has a weight that compounds over time.

The clients you're keeping past their time.

Some client relationships have a natural end. The ones you're extending past yours are paying you in the wrong currency — revenue without alignment, volume without genuine fit. That's not a sustainable exchange, and the body almost always registers it before the spreadsheet does.

The thing you're doing at ten o'clock at night.

Not the client work. The other thing — the project, the direction, the idea that keeps surfacing when the official workday is done. That isn't a distraction. It's information about where your business actually wants to go. When it's consistently different from where your business is going, that gap is the business cost nobody's calculating.

Most of what gets called business work is optimization — making the current thing incrementally better — and most of the time, it's the wrong job entirely. In this piece, Karen Kleinwort draws the line between optimization and business operations, explains why that distinction matters most in the one-to-five-year stage, and identifies the moment when the next right move isn't to refine what's there but to decide whether what's there is right. She names three things real business operations require that optimization never asks for: a clear decision about what you're building, the willingness to hold imperfection while you build it, and the authority to claim what this business actually is. If you've been working hard and not moving, this piece names why.

Optimization feels productive because it produces visible output: the cleaner funnel, the better sequence, the improved process. However, business operations feels like standing in the middle of something and deciding what it actually is — which is much less comfortable and significantly more important.

I've been operating businesses since I was twelve years old. The thing that separates the operators I've seen build something lasting from the ones who stay perpetually busy without moving is this: the operators make decisions about what the business is. The optimizers keep making the current decisions better.

Those are optimization questions. A business operations question is: "Does this business — as currently structured — reflect what I actually want to be building?"

Most business owners in the growth stage haven't been asked that question in any meaningful way. The business has been almost growing, and the work has been to keep up with it. However, there comes a point when keeping up starts to feel like the whole problem. When efficiency is no longer the metric that matters.

That's the operations threshold. Not a crisis — a threshold. The moment when the next right move isn't to refine what's already there. And it's the reason they keep optimizing instead of deciding.

The authority to operate doesn't come from having everything figured out. It comes from clarity about what you're building and the willingness to commit to it — imperfect as it currently is.

When you stop optimizing and start operating, the business changes.

The revenue ceiling is the most commonly misdiagnosed problem in a growing business — and the misdiagnosis almost always involves blaming marketing for something marketing can't fix. In this piece, Karen Kleinwort names the three places a revenue ceiling actually lives after twenty years of working with businesses at this exact stuck point: pricing that's below what the work delivers, positioning that's attracting the wrong clients at any price, and the willingness — or unwillingness — to be seen operating at actual scale. She reframes the ceiling from obstacle to diagnostic and gives three questions for reading yours honestly. If your number hasn't moved through multiple marketing changes, this is the piece that explains why.

A business owner has been at roughly the same revenue number for twelve to eighteen months. She has tried new marketing — new offer, better sales page, sharper copy, updated funnel. The number hasn't moved.

She concludes she has a marketing problem. So she tries one more marketing approach. The number stays exactly where it is.

Here's what's actually happening: the revenue ceiling has survived three different marketing approaches. That means the marketing is not the variable. Something else is capping the revenue, and it is almost certainly more specific than a traffic problem.

It's a diagnostic.

Every revenue ceiling sits at a specific intersection — not randomly, but because something specific is capping growth there. The ceiling is the message. However, most business owners respond by working harder on the marketing when they should be reading what the ceiling is pointing to.

After nearly twenty years of working with businesses at this exact stuck point, I can describe the revenue ceiling fairly precisely. It almost never lives where the business owner thinks it does. And it almost always lives in one of three specific places.

If the price is below what the work actually delivers, the business works harder than it should for less than it should earn. The ceiling sets at a level that requires constant volume to maintain — and volume without right-sized margin is not growth. More clients at wrong pricing doesn't raise the revenue ceiling. It entrenches it.

Positioning. Positioning that's too broad, too timid, or three years stale attracts clients who aren't the right fit at any price. The revenue is there, but the quality of the revenue isn't. The business feels busy and draining simultaneously. That simultaneous feeling — both full and depleted — is the ceiling telling you something about positioning, not effort.

Willingness to be seen at actual scale. This is the one nobody puts in a strategy document, but almost every revenue ceiling involves it. There's a level of visibility the business owner knows is available. She hasn't stepped into it yet. Not because the market isn't there — because she's not ready to be seen as someone who operates at that level. That readiness is the actual work.

The question is: *What is this ceiling showing me?*

That reframe is the whole shift. A ceiling that responds to new marketing has a visibility problem. However, a ceiling that persists through multiple marketing approaches is telling you something about pricing, positioning, or personal readiness. No amount of additional marketing will move it.

Here's how to start reading yours. Where are you consistently acquiring the wrong client? What does your consistent undercharging say about your actual positioning? And where are you consistently doing everything right and still holding back from saying the full number?

One of those three is almost always the revenue ceiling. Find it, and the ceiling becomes a map — not a wall.

When I first started learning about growing a social media presence, I felt completely lost. I was a mom with two kids, running between school drop-offs and soccer practices, trying to build my coaching business in the quiet moments of my day. It felt like everyone else knew some secret formula for posting, connecting, and selling online. But what I discovered is that growing social media isn’t about algorithms — it’s about connection, consistency, and being yourself.

Today, I want to share the simple social media tips that have helped me grow my business while still being present for my family — because I know you can do it too.

1. Show Up as You — Not Who You Think You Should Be

When I started posting, I tried to sound “professional.” My captions were stiff, and my pictures looked more like stock photos than real life. Then one day, I posted a messy desk photo with a caption about balancing work and motherhood — and it got more likes and comments than anything else I’d shared before.

That’s when I realized that people connect with real. You don’t need perfect lighting or fancy editing. Share the stories that make you, you. Talk about your wins, your struggles, and even the silly moments that happen along the way.

When you lead with honesty, people trust you. And when they trust you, they buy from you.

2. Keep It Simple — One Platform at a Time

It’s easy to feel like you need to be everywhere — Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, and all the new platforms that pop up each year. But you don’t need to do it all at once.

When I first started growing my business’s social media presence, I focused on just one platform: Facebook. That was where my audience already spent time, so I showed up there every day — sharing posts, commenting on others, and responding to messages. Once I got consistent and comfortable, I added Instagram.

Start small. Focus on one platform and excel on it. Then, when you’re ready, you can expand.

3. Create a Simple Plan You Can Stick With

You don’t need a complicated content calendar or fancy tools to grow online. You just need a plan that works for you.

Try this simple rhythm:

Motivation Monday: Share an encouraging thought or quote that fits your brand.

Tip Tuesday: Teach something small that helps your audience.

Wisdom Wednesday: Tell a short story or a lesson you’ve learned.

Feature Friday: Highlight a client, product, or win.

This rhythm keeps you consistent and helps your audience know what to expect. Plus, it makes planning posts faster and easier.

4. Use Stories to Build Connection

People love stories — and so do algorithms! Whether it’s a photo of your morning coffee, a behind-the-scenes look at your work, or a quick video sharing your thoughts, stories bring people closer to you.

When I started showing up on camera, I was nervous. But then I remembered my goal wasn’t to be perfect — it was to be present. I spoke to my camera as if I were chatting with a friend. My followers started responding more. They asked questions, shared their own stories, and even booked calls.

Your story makes your business human. Don’t be afraid to share it.

5. Engage, Don’t Just Post

One of the biggest mistakes I see women make online is posting and walking away. Social media is social.

If someone comments, reply. If someone sends a message, respond to it. Take a few minutes each day to comment on others’ posts and celebrate their wins. It doesn’t just help the algorithm — it builds real relationships.

Some of my best collaborations and client connections started with a simple comment or heart emoji. Remember, people want to feel seen and heard — and when you give that, they’ll give it back.

6. Measure What Matters — Not Just Likes

It’s easy to get caught up in numbers — followers, likes, views. But what really matters is engagement and connection.

Ask yourself:

Are people commenting or messaging me?

Are my posts helping me connect with potential clients?

Am I building trust and community?

If you’re getting yeses, you’re on the right track. Remember, 100 engaged followers can grow your business faster than 10,000 silent ones.

7. Give Before You Ask

The most successful social media strategies are built on a foundation of generosity. Share helpful tips. Encourage others. Offer value without expecting anything in return.

When I started doing that — giving first, with love — everything changed. My audience grew, my engagement increased, and I started attracting clients who were aligned with my mission and energy.

People can feel your heart through the screen. Lead with kindness, and growth will follow.

Final Thoughts

Social media doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With small, consistent actions and a heart-centered mindset, you can grow your audience, attract your ideal clients, and build a business you truly love.

And remember — your voice matters. The world needs your story, your energy, and your unique gifts.

If you’re ready to take the next step in growing social media for your business — or if you just need a little clarity on where to start — I’d love to help.

If you have questions or need support with business planning, please schedule a free clarity session with me. Click here to schedule now.

As a mom and small business owner, I know how busy life can get. Between making breakfast, helping with homework, running to hockey and/or tennis practice, and managing your business, it can feel like there’s no time left for marketing. But here’s the truth — marketing your business doesn’t have to be big or fancy. In fact, some of the most effective ways to grow come from simple, daily marketing tips that keep your business visible and your audience engaged.

When I first started my business, I used to think marketing meant big ad campaigns or long social media posts. But I quickly learned that small, consistent actions add up — just like teaching our kids one small habit at a time. Each day presents a new opportunity to share your story, connect with your audience, and reveal the heart behind your business.

Today, I’d like to share a few daily marketing tips that any busy mom can use — even if you only have 15 minutes a day.

1. Start with One Simple Share

Each morning, after I’ve had my coffee and the kids are out the door, I take five minutes to post something on social media. It doesn’t need to be perfect. Sometimes it’s a photo of my messy desk with a caption like, “Progress, not perfection!” And you’ll notice, there are days I actually miss posting something random, and you’ll see just posts that I had pre-scheduled. Other times, it’s a short video of me discussing what I’m working on.

People love seeing the real you. Don’t overthink it. Share a peek into your day, a quick tip, or something that made you smile. Consistency matters more than perfection.

2. Ask a Question to Start a Conversation

Marketing isn’t about talking at people — it’s about talking with them. One of my favorite ways to connect is by asking a simple question on Facebook or Instagram. For example:

“What’s one small win you’re celebrating today?”

“What helps you stay motivated when life gets busy?”

These questions invite your audience to engage. Plus, when people comment, it helps more eyes see your posts. Over time, this builds trust and relationships — the heart of every successful business.

3. Celebrate Your Customers

When someone buys from you, shares your post, or refers a friend — celebrate them! Tag them in a thank-you post, send a personal message, or share their success story (with permission). It’s one of the best daily marketing tips I’ve ever practiced because it shows genuine care.

When your customers feel appreciated, they become your most loyal supporters. And the more you recognize them, the more likely they’ll talk about your business to others.

4. Use Stories to Show, Not Just Tell

People remember stories more than facts. Think about how you started your business — maybe it began at your kitchen table, between nap times, or after your 9-to-5 job. Share that journey. Talk about the lessons learned, the challenges faced, and the wins worth celebrating.

For example, I once posted about how my daughter inspired one of my programs when she said, “Mom, you help people dream big!” That one post received more comments than any ad I’d ever run. It reminded me that real stories connect hearts.

5. Keep a Simple “Content Jar”

Some days, inspiration just doesn’t come. On those days, I grab my content jar — a small container filled with ideas written on sticky notes. Things like:

“Share a client win.”

“Post a behind-the-scenes photo.”

“Talk about why you love what you do.”

It’s a quick and easy way to stay consistent without feeling stressed. If you don’t want to make a jar, keep a note on your phone with ideas you can pull from anytime.

6. End the Day with Gratitude

Before I close my laptop, I like to post or jot down something I’m grateful for — maybe a kind comment, a new connection, or just a good day of getting things done. Gratitude creates positive energy that shines through everything you do.

And when you share that gratitude with your audience, it inspires them too. You never know who needs that little reminder that they’re doing great.

7. Remember: Small Steps Create Big Results

The best marketing doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the daily, steady rhythm of showing up — one post, one comment, one conversation at a time. Even on days when you feel like you’re not making progress, remember that each small effort plants a seed.

When I look back, the growth in my business didn’t come from one big moment. It came from everyday moments — sharing my story, cheering on others, and being consistent, even when life felt busy.

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath and start small. Use these daily marketing tips to keep your business growing while keeping your peace of mind. You’re already doing amazing things — I’m just here to remind you that success starts with small, loving steps each day.

If you have questions or need support with business planning, please schedule a free clarity session with me. Click here to schedule now.

I still remember the early days of running my first small business. Money was tight, time was short, and I felt like I was doing everything alone. Then one day, something shifted. I decided to focus on gratitude marketing—a way to connect with people by simply saying “thank you” with purpose. From that moment on, my business felt lighter, happier, and more human.

What Is Gratitude Marketing?

Gratitude marketing is about showing appreciation to the people who help your business grow—your clients, customers, followers, and even your family. When we show genuine gratitude, we remind people that they matter. And when people feel seen, they stay connected.

Consider this: gratitude marketing fosters lasting relationships. It’s the bridge between you and your community. It keeps customers returning, not because of a fancy ad or a discount, but because they feel cared for.

Why Gratitude Works

As a mom of two, I’ve learned that people respond to kindness and consistency—whether it’s at home or in business. Gratitude marketing is effective because it transforms transactions into meaningful connections. When someone feels appreciated, they are more likely to recommend you to their friends. They are more likely to trust you.

And trust builds business.

When I started sending personal thank-you notes to new clients, I didn’t expect much. However, I soon noticed that those same clients started referring others. Gratitude created a ripple effect. Every small act of appreciation became a magnet for more good things to come.

Simple Ways to Practice Gratitude Marketing

You don’t need a big budget to start gratitude marketing. You just need heart. Here are a few simple ways to begin today:

Say thank you often.
Send a short email, a handwritten card, or even a voice note. Express your gratitude to people for their support.

Celebrate your clients.
Share their wins on social media. Tag them and let your community cheer them on as well. It shows you care beyond the sale.

Give small surprises.
A discount, a free resource, or a little bonus gift can make someone’s day. Small gestures go a long way.

Be consistent.
Gratitude is not a one-time thing. Make it a part of your weekly routine. Maybe every Friday, you write a few thank-you messages.

Listen more.
Sometimes the best way to show gratitude is to listen. Ask your clients how they’re doing. Ask what they need. Then follow through.

How Gratitude Strengthens Your Brand

When your business shows gratitude, it stands out. You stop being “just another brand” and become a friend, a supporter, a cheerleader. People want to work with those who make them feel valued and appreciated.

Gratitude marketing turns followers into fans and customers into partners. And it’s not only about the people you serve—it’s also about your team. A quick “thank you for your hard work” can make your staff feel valued and inspired.

When I ran my first community project, I made it a rule to celebrate every milestone together. We didn’t just talk about sales or goals—we talked about gratitude. The joy in those meetings made our projects stronger and our clients happier. Gratitude changed everything.

The Ripple Effect of Gratitude

The beautiful thing about gratitude marketing is that it continues to grow. When you show appreciation, people pass it on. One kind message leads to another. Before you know it, your business becomes known for its heart.

I’ve seen women in my community use gratitude to turn small ideas into thriving businesses. They didn’t start with big marketing budgets. They began with thank-you notes, kind words, and open hearts.

When gratitude is at the center of your business, you attract people who share your values. You build relationships that last—because they’re rooted in care, not convenience.

Bringing It All Together

Gratitude marketing is more than a strategy—it’s a way of being. It reminds us that success isn’t only measured in numbers but also in how we make others feel.

So today, take a moment to reach out. Express gratitude to a client, team member, or mentor. Let them know how much they mean to you. You’ll be amazed at what happens next.

And remember, when you lead with love and gratitude, your business will always find its way.

If you have questions or need support with business planning, please schedule a complimentary clarity session with me. Click here to schedule now.

Fall is here, and so are my favorite spooky social media tricks to boost engagement! I love this time of year—the crisp air, cozy sweaters, and of course, all things pumpkin. But beyond the costumes and candy, fall is the perfect season to add a little fun and creativity to your social media.

When I first started my business, I remember how hard it felt to stand out online. Everyone seemed to have the perfect posts, and I didn’t know where to start. But then I realized something simple—people connect with real people. So today, I want to share a few lighthearted, spooky-themed tricks that can help you bring your audience closer while growing your business.

1. Try using a spooky theme for October. You can call it “31 Days of Biz Magic” or “Boo-tiful Business Tips.” Each day, share a simple idea, quote, or behind-the-scenes peek that ties into your theme.

For example, post a “Scary Business Mistake” you learned from and what you did to fix it. Keep it real and helpful. Your audience will love your honesty and your creativity.

When I did this one year, I noticed more comments and shares than ever before. People related to the silly “mistakes” I shared because they’d made them too! That’s the magic of spooky social media—it’s playful but still packed with purpose.

2. Share Your “Monster Metrics”

Numbers can feel scary, but sharing your wins helps your audience trust you. Create a fun graphic showing your “monster metrics”—like how many clients you’ve helped, the number of new followers you’ve gained, or how many hours you’ve saved with a new system.

You can say, “I’ve helped 25 clients break free from their biggest fears in business—what’s your biggest fear right now?” This simple question encourages engagement and starts great conversations.

I do this with my clients often, and it sparks connection. It shows that growth isn’t perfect—it’s a process. And that’s something every entrepreneur can relate to.

3. Host a “Trick or Treat” Giveaway

One of the easiest ways to boost engagement is with a giveaway! You can call it “Trick or Treat for Entrepreneurs.” Ask followers to share one lesson they’ve learned in their business this year. Then, choose one or two winners to receive a small prize—maybe a free 20-minute strategy chat, a digital planner, or a coffee gift card.

I’ve hosted mini giveaways like this in my Women’s Business Resource Community, and they always bring new energy to the group. It’s a chance to celebrate progress and reward your audience for showing up. And it fits the spooky social media vibe perfectly!

4. Tell a “Haunted Business Story”

Everyone loves a good story—especially one with a happy ending. Share a short story about a time something in your business didn’t go as planned. Maybe you launched a product that didn’t sell or worked too hard and burned out.

Be real about what scared you most and how you overcame it. Then share what you learned. This type of story makes you relatable and human. I once shared about a time I tried to do everything myself and almost gave up. The comments flooded in with other women saying, “Me too!”

That’s when I realized—authenticity builds trust faster than any ad ever could.

5. Use Spooky Hashtags and Emojis

Sometimes, the smallest details make the biggest difference. Sprinkle in Halloween-themed emojis or hashtags like #SpookySocialMedia, #BooYourBiz, or #WickedlySmartWomen.

These little touches make your posts stand out in a fun, festive way. And when people smile while reading your post, they’re more likely to engage. Remember, engagement isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being present.

6. Share a Behind-the-Scenes “Potion”

Your followers love to see what’s behind the curtain. Share a photo or short video of your workspace, morning routine, or your favorite coffee mug that keeps you going.

You can even call it your “magic potion” for productivity. I once posted a picture of my favorite mug with the caption, “Double-shot latte equals double-shot confidence!” It got more likes than any other post that month because people love seeing the real person behind the brand.

7. End with a “Treat”

Before Halloween ends, give your followers something valuable—like a free checklist, mini training, or motivational message. A “treat” doesn’t have to cost you anything; it just needs to show you care.

When I share free resources or host mini live sessions, I’m always amazed at how many women reach out afterward to say thank you. That’s what community is all about—lifting each other up, one spooky season at a time.

Final Thoughts

As women entrepreneurs, we wear so many hats—mom, mentor, marketer, and motivator. But the truth is, business doesn’t have to feel serious all the time. When we bring joy, creativity, and a little spooky fun into our work, we connect with our audience in a way that’s natural and real.

So, this fall, try one (or all!) of these spooky social media tricks to boost engagement. You might be surprised by how much your audience loves the playful side of your brand.

And remember—your presence is your power. Keep showing up, sharing your heart, and building your business one post at a time.

If you have questions or need support with business planning, please schedule a free clarity session with me. Click here to schedule now.

In fact, when I first started coaching other women entrepreneurs, it was during a summer break. I had one kid at soccer practice, the other at art camp, and I was typing up notes from a client call while waiting in the car with a lemonade. That’s when I realized: summer is busy, but it’s also full of inspiration if we let it be.

So today, I want to share some freedom marketing ideas to help you stay connected with your audience — without spending all your time online.

It’s being able to close my laptop early to catch my kids’ swim meet. Use your content this month to share your version of freedom.
